Gestational diabetes - information from your gynecologist

Gestational diabetes is defined as a sugar illness that first occurs during pregnancy. It is treatable, and through the early detection and appropriate treatment the risk for mother and child can significantly reduced.

There is an increased risk for the mother with:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Hypertension
  • Pre-eclampsia / eclampsia
  • Birth complications (increased caesarean section rate)
  • Emergence of a manifest diabetes after many years


An increased risk for the child:

  • Obese, but premature newborns (macrosomia)
  • Increased formation of amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios) and prematurity
  • Intrauterine fetal death
  • Birth complications
  • Hypoglycemia after birth
  • Respiratory distress syndrome
  • Disease to diabetes and obesity already in puberty


When diagnosed gestational another diagnosis would, in cooperation with a slide betologen done and ananappropriate therapy (eg. nutrition conversion, regular blood sugar tests, possibly setting on insulin) starts.
